Galaxy held by Chippa
Chippa United and TS Galaxy played to a 1-1 draw in a 2020-21 DStv Premiership match at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth on Saturday.
Following a goalless first half, the two teams traded penalties in the second with Andile Mbenyane on target for the hosts before Lindokuhle Mbatha’s equaliser soon after. The result leaves Galaxy and Chippa in 11th and 13th spot on the league standings respectively.
The opening stanza provided little in terms of goalscoring opportunities but the game finally kicked into life following the break as Chippa won a penalty after Anthony Laffor was fouled inside the area. Mbenyane stepped up and continued his run of form with a goal in the 61st minute.
Galaxy were awarded a spot-kick of their own following a foul on Mxolisi Macuphu five minutes later and Mbatha proved equally capable of leveling matters.
Chippa had a chance to snatch a late winner but Sizwa Mdlinzo failed to beat Marlon Heugh in a one-on-one situation before the Rockets shot-stopper pulled off another save to deny Mbenyane his brace with four minutes of regulation time remaining.
The Chilli Boys ended the game with 10-men after Isaac Nhlapo received his marching orders for a dangerous tackle on former Ajax Cape Town teammate Masilake Phohlongo. Chippa were able to see out stoppage-time with a man less to hold on for a point in their first home match since late November.
