In the absence of the suspended Pogiso Sanoka, who is still serving his sentence, the towering talisman Mxolisi Macuphu is leading TS Galaxy FC on an interim basis.
He took over the armband in the game against Lamontville Golden Arrows this past weekend.
Sanoka was sent off against Stellenbosch and is set to be sidelined for three matches.
Macuphu stepped up to take over the reins as the leader and did so with aplomb. He scored his maiden goal for the new season.
“It was something out of the ordinary. Captaining the club is another step. It is you and the team. You are now representing everyone. I don’t want to lie, it was a great experience,” Macuphu explained.
Macuphu is a vital cog for the Rockets. Last season, he scooped the golden boot award, having netted five strikes and notched up five assists.
”I’d like to thank the coach and the whole technical team for showing faith and support in myself. They showed that there’s a leader within me. It is something special,” he added.
As a striker, Macuphu is expected to bang in goals consistently. The leadership role also comes with its burden.
”It was an added pressure for me. Football is always a pressure game. Whether you are a captain or not, there’s pressure. An added pressure comes when you have to show that you can lead by example. It was something great for me.” Macuphu elaborated.
